Day 1: Overview: Types of Sentences
Why do we learn about sentence structures?
我們為甚麼要學習句子的結構?
Although most sentences are simple sentences, you can present your ideas more clearly if you can use phrases and clauses carefully. Your writing will be much more interesting if it consists of more than simple sentences.
雖然大多數的句子都是簡單的句子, 但若你能夠小心地使用短語和子句, 你將可以更清楚地表達你的意思和想法. 你的文章也會因為有不同的句子結構而變得更有趣.
A sentence may comprise of many different parts: 一句句子可以是由以下的部份組成:
1. Subject and predicate 主語和謂語 2. Direct and indirect objects 直接和簡接賓語 3. Complements (can be nouns, adjectives, pronouns or phrases) 補語 (可以是名詞 ,形容詞 ,代詞或詞組 ) 4. Appositives (can be words, phrases or clauses) 同位語 (可以是詞 ,短語或從句 ) 5. Sentence modifiers 句子修飾語 6. Phrases and clauses 短語和從句 |
A sentence can be classified in two ways: according to its basic type or according to its function.
一個句子可以按兩種情況來分類: 它的基本形式, 或它的作用
Basic types: 基本形式
1. Simple sentences (can be subdivided into four types)
簡單句形 (可以再細分為四類)
e.g. She is a dancer.
2. Complex sentences (comprise one main (independent) clause + one or more dependent clauses)
複雜句形 (由一個主句及一或多句附屬從句組成)
e.g. Any student who has studied hard knows that practice makes perfect.
3. Compound sentences (contain multiple independent clauses)
複合句形 (由多於一個主句組成)
e.g. I love dancing but my sister likes singing.
Functions: 作用
1. Declarative sentences (to make statements) 陳述
Cats and dogs hate each other.
2. Interrogative sentences (to ask questions) 發問
Where have you been?
3. Imperative sentences (to give orders) 命令
Stand up.
4. Exclamatory sentences (to convey strong emotions) 感歎
How excellent you look!
If you want to look at sentences in more detail, you can categorise sentences into nine basic patterns. We will look at these nine patterns in the coming days.
