What is a noun? 甚麼是名詞?
A noun is
the name given to a ‘thing’. A ‘things’ may be a person, a place,
an animal, an object,
a feeling or a situation, e.g.
Peter,
名詞是一些東西的名字。那些東西可以是人、地方、物件、感覺或狀況。
What
are Proper Nouns? 甚麼是專有名詞?
Proper
Nouns are nouns that refer
to names of people and places,
e.g. John, Shatin,
專有名詞是人物或地方的名字。
The first letter of a
proper noun is always capitalized, no matter which
part of the sentence it is in.
不論最句中的那一部份,專有名詞中的第一個英文字母必須要大寫。
Other
proper nouns include: 其他專有名詞
1. Titles used with the names of people (職稱、稱謂)
e.g. Dr. Smith, Miss Chan.
2. Months, days, holidays (月份、星期、節日)
e.g. April, Saturday, Chinese New Year
3. The names of courses/subjects (科目或課程的名稱)
e.g. History, Chemistry, Music
4. The names of Languages and nationalities (語言、國籍)
e.g. Chinese, Spanish, Italian
5. The names of religions (宗教)
e.g. Buddhism, Christianity, Islam
What
are Collective Nouns? 甚麼是集合名詞?
Collective
Nouns refer
to groups,
e.g. money, furniture, population, herd, flock.
集合名詞所代表的是種類或集體的東西
We
can add ‘the’ in front of an
adjective to make it into a collective noun,
e.g. the rich, the young, the poor, etc.
我們可以在形容詞前加上’the’,使它成為集合名詞。
What are common nouns? 甚麼是普通名詞?
We
call nouns other than proper nouns common
nouns. The first letter of
a common noun is not capitalized unless
it is at the beginning of a sentence.
除專有名詞外,所有的名詞都是普通名詞。除非普通名詞最句首,否則,普通名詞的第一個字母是不用大寫的。
e.g. Happiness
is important to me.
We all like happiness.
Common
nouns can be further divided into countable
nouns and uncountable
nouns. Countable nouns have singular forms and
plural forms. We will discuss nouns further in
the coming days.
普通名詞可再被細分為’可數名詞’和’不可數名詞’。而可數名詞是有單數和複數的不同型態的。
在未來數天,我們會進一步探討這些不同種類的名詞。
