Topic: Adjectives

Day 4: +ed or +ing

Some Adjectives end with “-ing” or “-ed”. Please look at the following examples.

e.g.:  Jane’s job is boring.

Jane is bored with her job.

Somebody is bored if something or somebody else is boring. Or, if something is boring, it makes you bored. So we can say:

Jane is bored because her job is boring.

Jane’s job is boring, so Jane is bored. (But we cannot say “ Jane is boring”)

Another example:

e.g.: The book is very interesting.

Mike is very interested in the book.

According to the examples, we may know that words ending with “-ing” are used to express the feeling something gives to a person. And the words ending with “-ed” are used to show a person’s feeling.

Please compare the following sentences to learn more about it.

Julia thinks politics is very interesting.

Julia is very interested in politics.
