4.3        Conjunctions

Day 2    Coordinating conjunctions and correlative conjunctions

 

 

1. Coordinating conjunctions connect two independent clauses, both clauses are equally important. 並列/對等連接詞把兩個

    獨立句子連接起來兩個從句是同等重要的

    e.g.: Hurry up, or you’ll be late.

            Both she and I are pleased with the girl.

            Chinese is not only spoken in China , but also all over the world.

   

2. Coordinating conjunctions can be divided into two kinds: Simple Conjunctions and Correlative conjunctions. 並列/對等連接

    詞可以被分成兩種 : 簡單連接詞和相互連接詞

  

    (1). Simple Conjunctions includes 簡單連接詞包括 and, or, but, so, for.

 

   a. and : can be also used in imperative sentences. 可以用於祈使

       e.g.: Let’s go and see her after school.

        Eat less, and you will be thinner soon.

 

    b. or : can be also used imperative sentences and means if you don’t …, you’ll…. 可以用於祈使並有 如果不….便

        …’的意思

        e.g.: Get up early, or you’ll be late for school.

         He can’t read or write.

 

     c. so : and for that reason; therefore 所以

         e.g.: He told me to go there, so I went.

          So you are back again.

 

     d. for : because of or as a result of something 因為由於

        e.g.: He shook his head, for he thought differently.

         We must get up early, for we have a long way to go.

 

     (2). Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words that link two parts (words, phrases and clause) together. This form of

             conjunctions work in pairs such as both … and, either … or, neither … nor, as … as, whether …or, not only … but also.

             The words, phrases or clauses that are linked together must be grammatically equal.

            相互連接詞是一雙詞語用來把句子中的兩部份(短語和從句)連繫起來這類連接詞是要一雙一雙使用

            的 both … and, either … or, neither … nor, as … as, whether …or, not only … but also. 被這類連接詞所連起的

            字短語或從句必須在文法上同等重要

 

    e.g.: Both you and I like sleeping.

    I do not like either cake or ice-cream.

    I know neither Latin nor German.

 

   a. both…and

       e.g.: Both she and I are pleased with the girl.

      Both I and she is pleased with the girl.

      You can’t speak both American English and British English.

 

    b. either…or

        e.g.: He isn’t either a student or a teacher.

       Either my brother or my sisters don’t want to see me.

       Either my sisters or brother doesn’t want to see me.

 

    c. neither…nor

        e.g.: Neither he nor I have seen the play.

       Neither Tom nor you are a driver.

 

            d. not only…but also

        e.g.:  There are not only one billion people living in China , but also many Chinese people living outside China .

         The child is not only lively but also healthy.

          = The child is lively as well as healthy.
