Module 2: Formation of Words |
2.3 Nouns
Day 1: Countable and Uncountable Nouns 可數和不可數名詞
1. Countable Nouns可數名詞
Countable nouns are nouns that have both singular and plural forms. 可數名詞可被分為單數和複數的形式.
The following nouns are countable:
‘suggestion’; ‘book’; ‘fish’; ‘obstacle’; ‘difficulty’; ‘journal’; ‘reporter’ etc.
For instance (例),
Mary gave a lot of constructive suggestions at the conference.
There are many difficulties in life that we have to overcome.
2. Uncountable nouns不可數名詞
There are a number of nouns in English that are uncountable and they have no plural form. Uncountable nouns refer to things that cannot be separated into individual pieces that it would be reasonable to count separately e.g. water. The uncountable nouns must be contained in order to be counted e.g. a bowl of water. 除了可數名詞外,其餘的名詞就是不可數名詞,它們都沒有複數的形式.
Uncountable nouns include:
Types of liquid and gas; types of material; small and fine things; collectives; concept nouns; abstract nouns.
液體, 氣體, 物料, 細小的東西, 不能被分割的一組東西或一些概念 和抽象名詞都是不可數名詞
.
For nouns like ‘rain’, ‘oil’, ‘water’, ‘news’, ‘persuasion’ and ‘beauty’, we would never add a “s” to make a plural form. 所以我們不會加’s’ 到‘rain’, ‘oil’, ‘water’, ‘news’, ‘persuasion’ 和 ‘beauty’
Examples of uncountable nouns include另外一些不可數名詞:
‘soup’, ‘oxygen’, ‘rice’, ‘information’ ‘technology’ ‘advice’ ‘money’ ‘furniture’ ‘progress’ ‘equipment’
For instance,(例句)
This book contains much useful information for our project.
Thanks for giving me so much advice.
